Prof Teo grew up in KL and studied in Singapore and in Cambridge. She never thought that she would have the opportunity to study overseas, let alone in Cambridge. She never thought that she would become a scientist, let alone lead a cancer research organization. But the Yayasan Sime Darby scholarship and an opportunity to set up an initiative to tackle cancer in Malaysia changed all that. To Prof Teo, there were initially many fears – fear of failure, fear that we would not be able to do anything significant, fear that we would not be able to win the fight against cancer. But now, having established a credible cancer research organization funded entirely by charity and research grants, and having established new ways of using Precision Medicine in Asians, Prof Teo is optimistic that we can turn the tide against cancer, right here in Asia.
