With the Southeast Asian Games nearing, we Malaysians are sure excited for this biennial event. Why? Because it’s happening right here in our country! Not to mention that we will also be hosting the 9th ASEAN Para Games, making year the 2017 a highlight year for Malaysia. With that being said, here are the top 10 things you’ll want to know about this upcoming event that everyone’s talking about.
The whole SEA Games idea first originated from then vice-president of Thailand’s Olympic Committee with an idea of promoting relations in between countries in the Southeast Asian region.
It was formerly known as the SEAP Games (South East Asian Peninsula Games) before the federation changed its name to SEA Games ( South East Asian Games).
The first SEA Games was held in Bangkok, Thailand.
This year marks the 29th SEA Games which has been happening over the past 58 years.
The SEA Games will be starting on the 19th of August till the 30th of August.
The participating countries in the SEA Games include Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Singapore, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, Brunei, Indonesia, Philippines and East Timor.
It is actually not Malaysia’s first time to be hosting this huge sports event but the sixth time!

With both the SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games that are going to be held, a brand name- KUALA LUMPUR 2017 (KL2017) was introduced. The official mascot representing KL2017 is inspired by the Malayan Tiger, Rimau. Check out the mascot above, how cute!
The games will be coinciding with Malaysia’s 60th Independence Day celebration as well as Malaysia Day, meaning that it’s gonna get real busy for us Malaysians. Better mark down your calendars!
A total of 38 sports will be contested during this upcoming event with winter sports making its first ever debut in SEA Games.
